A deadly
blast occurred in the provincial capital Maroua, Cameroon, where a
female terrorist detonated a bomb close to a crowded bar in the Pont Vert
district on Saturday evening. At least 19 people lost their lives and dozens
sustained injuries.
The Cameroonian
army has been using the strategic town of Maroua as the headquarters for its
operations against the Boko Haram group, as part of a multinational force fighting
the militants in neighbouring parts of Nigeria.
President Paul
Biya described the attacks as "cowardly and ignoble".
The militants
have increasingly been using female suicide bombers posing as beggars as they
are often able to smuggle bombs into public places without detection. Book Haram,
whose name means Western education is forbidden, has claimed responsibility for
a number of deadly attacks, predominantly, in Nigeria since the beginning of
its operations in 2009.
No terrorism
group has claimed responsibility for the attack.Meanwhile, a white man was arrested later with explosives and arms in his car. He was taken by the police for probing.
