Why I would receive this Scholarship
I am a mature, 55-year-old,
returning college student with Architecture and Business, as a major and minor
respectively. The ability to design is a very powerful and intriguing skill
that evolves from a human being’s originality and perspective. Formulating
my creations, while creating a parallel between imagination and reality
has been an inspiration in my life and career as an architect. Self-expression
is one of the most profound factors that aids in differentiating one person
from the other. It is my ardor for architecture that acts as a motivating
factor for my inspiration, and subsequently gives me an outstanding sense of
ambition and desire. I would like to get back to school to keep myself up to
date and relevant in the job market by upgrading my skills in order to increase
my chances of upward mobility career-wise, be it as an architect or as a
business/ corporate manager.
The majority of community colleges
today involved in the creation or expansion of university programs, which
engage the 50 plus population in learning, training or re-training, therefore,
I did not experience challenges in locating a college that is to my expected
standards. Given the recent recession, I feel the need to work more, and I
believe this will only be possible if I am up to date with the skills and
advancements in technology in the current society. Furthermore, I have more
bills to cater for and a family to support, which makes paying for my fees a
challenge.
Even though I view getting back to
class as a crucial area of focus in my life, I try hard to be more involved in
activities that improve me in order to be a well-rounded individual. Basically,
keeping a healthy physique is a requirement for the achievement of a healthy
status of the brain. Therefore, I frequent the gym and enjoy a myriad of
sporting activities in athletics ranging from track events to rowing, which
enable me to work within a group environment. On the other hand, I also make
attempts at integrating my passion for architecture in volunteer activities for
humanitarian crisis remotely from my home, on a short-term basis. The contrast
in terms of leisure and learning has helped me to create a clear sense of
balance in my life.
I deserve this scholarship because
I am a person that possesses the attributes of hard work, determination, and
resiliency to follow through systems in order to attain the goals I have set. I
am organized and have always looked for a challenge in my work environments,
but remained focused about joining college. I believe getting back to college
to refresh my knowledge and skills the best decision I will ever make this year
regarding my career. Because of these qualities, I have faith in myself that I
will be able to follow through the educational system and obtain the quality
training I am aiming for.
Most architectural programs usually
have more women enrollment that men, but there is a pronounced problem of
retention. One of the pillars of the American Association of University Women
(AAUW) is championing for the equity of women and girls, and I believe they
will consider my application as one person that has gone through odds to pursue
education at my age. The proof of my enrollment is attached alongside this
application for your perusal.
